KLAMATH BASIN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGES ANNOUNCE 2003 REFUGE CENTENNIAL EVENTS
The Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges has announced a month-by-month series of public events to celebrate the Centennial of the National Wildlife Refuge System in 2003. Tours and other events will highlight wildlife resources and management on all six units of the Klamath Basin Refuges. All events will be focused on providing participants with an increased awareness of the role of the National Wildlife Refuge System in maintaining public resources.
On January 25th Refuge staff and volunteer bird watching experts will conduct a winter birdlife tour of Lower Klamath Refuge. Mid winter is a very exciting time to tour the Lower Klamath area as bald eagles, hawks and other raptors approach peak numbers in the Klamath Basin. The tour will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Lower Klamath Refuge entrance and conclude about 11:30 a.m.. Those planning to participate should contact the Refuge at so that transportation arrangements can be made. A mid morning snack and hot drinks will be provided. Participants may also want to bring a sack lunch and tour nearby Tule Lake Refuge and the Refuge visitor center after the morning tour.
Other highlighted events planned for the Klamath Basin Refuges during 2003 include:
February 14 through 16th - During the annual Bald Eagle Conference, a special Refuge Centennial exhibit, field trips to Refuge locations and an open house at the Refuge visitor center will be offered. This year the Bald Eagle Conference will be held at the Klamath Community College. Those interested can access information at "www.eaglecon.org" or contact the Refuge at the phone number listed above for a flier.
March 14th - The public is invited to attend a Refuge Centennial time capsule interment at the Tule Lake Refuge visitor center followed by a complementary lunch and refuge open house for participants. March 14th marks the day 100 years ago that the National Wildlife Refuge System was founded with the establishment of Pelican Island Refuge in Florida on March 14, 1903.
May 24th - The second annual Tule Lake Migratory Bird Festival will be held with a guest appearance by Theodore Roosevelt as a main attraction. Details on this event will be forthcoming at a later date.
